Namahage Hall and Oga Mayama Folklore Museum
A facility where you can experience the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage 'Namahage.' Powerful performances of the Namahage ritual can be seen.
At 'Namahage Hall' on the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture and the adjacent 'Oga Mayama Folklore Museum,' you can experience the traditional ritual 'Namahage,' which is also registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, throughout the year. At Namahage Hall, over 150 diverse Namahage masks are displayed, and at the Folklore Museum, performances of the Namahage ritual are held in a space recreating an actual folk house. The powerful voice and movements of 'Naku ko wa inai ka' (Aren't there any crying children?) overwhelm even adults. A spot where you can enjoy both the nature and culture of the Oga Peninsula simultaneously.
