Ruins of Dejima Dutch Trading Post
Dejima, the only gateway to the West during Japan's period of seclusion. Learn about the history of Japan-Dutch exchange through the restored trading post buildings.
Dejima is an artificial island that became Japan's only trading gateway with the West under the seclusion policy of the Edo period. Currently, the buildings of that time have been faithfully restored. Through the Dutch trading post director's residence, miniature models, and exhibits of traded goods, you can learn about the history of Japan-Dutch exchange spanning approximately 200 years. In 2017, the main gate bridge was constructed, making it possible to cross to Dejima via the same route as in that era. At night, it is beautifully illuminated, allowing you to enjoy a stroll in a fantastical atmosphere. It is a must-visit spot for exploring Nagasaki's history.
