Sengan-en is a villa garden built in 1658 by Mitsuhisa, the 19th head of the Shimazu clan, and is characterized by a magnificent landscape using Kinko Bay and Sakurajima as borrowed scenery. The garden is one of the constituent properties of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding, Coal Mining,' and is adjacent to the ruins of Japan's first modern factory complex, the Shussekan. Within the garden, you can tour Satsuma cut glass workshops and experience Satsuma pottery painting, and the luxurious furnishings inside the villa are also a must-see. You can spend a luxurious time enjoying the local specialty dangobomochi while viewing Sakurajima.
