Iizuka Coal Mine Heritage Walk
A journey through the Chikuhō Coal Field's history, visiting the Former Itō Denzaemon Residence and coal mine heritage sites to touch the memories of the region's living.
Iizuka City flourished as the center of the Chikuhō Coal Field from the Meiji to Shōwa periods, with historical heritage scattered throughout that tells of the prosperity of that time. The mansion of coal baron Itō Denzaemon is designated as a National Important Cultural Property, with beautiful gardens and luxurious architecture remaining on the vast grounds. There are also museums that tell of the lives of former coal mines and coal miners, allowing you to touch the history of the region that supported Japan's modernization. The Kaho Theater and other community spaces in the region continue to thrive, conveying the memories of life during the coal mining era to the present.
