Daisetsuzan Trekking
Trekking in the Daisetsuzan Range, home to Hokkaido's highest peak, Asahidake. Japan's earliest autumn leaves are also spectacular.
The Daisetsuzan Range, called the 'Roof of Hokkaido,' is Hokkaido's largest mountain area, with peaks including the highest, Asahidake (2,291m), stretching across the landscape. The Asahidake Ropeway takes you up to 1,600m elevation, making high-alpine trekking relatively accessible. In summer, alpine flowers bloom in vast meadows, and from early September, Japan's earliest autumn leaves paint the mountainsides. Routes suited to various skill levels are available, from beginner-friendly walks around Mirror Pond to advanced ridge-traversing courses.
