横手市, Akita
A traditional festival with over 450 years of history. Visitors can enjoy amazake and mochi inside snow kamakuras.
Held every year in February in Yokote City, Akita Prefecture, the Yokote Kamakura is a traditional festival with over 450 years of history. About 100 large kamakuras and countless mini kamakuras are built throughout the city, with water deities enshrined inside. When visitors enter a kamakura, local children warmly welcome them saying 'Itte tanse' (please come in), and treat them with amazake and mochi. At night, candlelight illuminates the snow, creating a fantastical landscape.
