Yokote City Masuda Manga Museum & Storehouse Town
Tour the interior storehouses and view original manga artwork in Masuda, a town of built-in storehouses. Traditional merchant storehouses and contemporary manga culture coexist.
Masuda District in Yokote City, Akita Prefecture is a historic townscape lined with merchant houses featuring magnificent "interior storehouses" built from the Meiji to Taisho eras. It has been designated as a National Important Traditional Structures Preservation District, and several merchant houses open their interior storehouses to the public. The lacquered walls and delicately carved interior storehouses are impressive to see as "storehouses within storehouses." The town also has the Masuda Manga Museum, which holds over 400,000 original manga artworks. The area is well-stocked with local souvenirs including pickled vegetables, soy sauce, and other fermented foods.
