Akita Kantō Festival
About 280 Kantō poles light up the night sky, making it one of the Three Great Festivals of Tōhoku. The light from lanterns modeled after rice ears creates a magical spectacle.
Held annually from August 3-6, the 'Akita Kantō Festival' is one of the Three Great Festivals of Tōhoku and designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Kantō poles reaching up to 12 meters long and weighing 50 kilograms are skillfully balanced and manipulated by performers on their foreheads, waists, and shoulders—a remarkable feat to behold. Approximately 10,000 lanterns suspended from about 280 Kantō poles sway like rice ears, painting the night sky golden with a breathtaking sight. During the daytime Kantō demonstrations, visitors can witness performers engage in earnest skill competitions up close.
